Reader looking for allergy-friendly restaurants
A reader named Joyce recently sent me this note via Facebook:
“Hey Denise – I have to eat gluten-free and dairy-free. That makes it difficult to eat out because of all the hidden gluten in most processed foods. There are restaurants that are helpful and work hard to provide gluten-free foods, but most are uncooperative. I was just wondering if (when things calm down a bit for you) you would consider doing a story about restaurants (like America’s Bistro, Oliver’s, Bull’s, etc.) who are conscientious and helpful about food allergy problems.”
That’s a great idea, Joyce!
Right away I can suggest Bahay Kubo (263 N. Convent) in Bourbonnais. I think their food is delicious, almost all menu items can be ordered gluten-free, and I believe there’s a gluten-free buffet the third Thursday of every month — which you’ll appreciate if you’re (understandably) intimidated by the hard-to-pronounce Filipino-Asian dishes on the menu.
Another reader named Elizabeth had this suggestion for Joyce, too:
“My son is on the same diet. I have some great cookbooks and resources if you ever want to talk. Aurelio’s has a GF pizza crust now and it is very good.”
Does anyone else know of other restaurants that are food allergy-friendly? If so, leave a comment below and I’ll include a list in a future print column.

Hi Denise! Great news about the baby! Congrats! It’s Lisa from China Chef. The owner/chef at the restaurant does cook for one of our customers that has to eat Glueten Free. She brings in her own soy sauce and corn starch & he makes it special for her. He doesn’t have the supplies to cook it that way, but if you want to bring it in, he will cook it that way. Also, Lone Star is Gluten Free friendly. Hope this helps your readers. Take care & good luck! Lisa Harris
