Best Bites column (July 2)

This column appears in the July 2, 2009, edition of The Daily Journal:

The new Bourbonnais location of JR’s Chicken was to open at 10:30 a.m. today at 654 N. Convent St., which is at the north end of the former Kroger building, next to Thomas David Salon. Unlike the Kankakee location, it will be carryout only. Most of the regular menu will be available, except for grilled items. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Their phone is (815) 929-0735.

Devon’s Bakery & Cafe has closed. There’s a sign in the window saying, “Devon’s is closed and will be opening under new ownership in the future. Thank you for your loyal support.” Devon’s was next to Busse & Rieck in west Kankakee. (Thanks to a reader named Anita for that tip.)

Higher Grounds (formerly Moon Monkey Coffee House) in Bourbonnais is closed until August, when Olivet students return.

A reader named Allan sent me this recommendation via e-mail: “I have found the BEST guacamole in Kankakee County: Dos Amigos on East River Street, just east of Harrison Avenue. Made fresh to order and available in three sizes. Excellent! Clean and friendly place, eat in or out.” Dos Amigos is at 533 E River St. in Kankakee. Their phone is (815) 802-9840. Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
