A reader named Jean emailed me yesterday asking about a new building going up near T.G.I.Friday’s and White Castle on the Route 50 frontage road in Bradley. Unfortunately, it isn’t a new restaurant; it will be an Aspen Dental.

Actually, it is a good thing it’s not another restaurant. The local folks here are being forced out of business by the national chains and those are the only things coming, it seems. We have a Schoops burgers coming to add to Steak and Shake/Burger King/Culvers/Applebe’s/Ruby Tuesday/WhiteCastle/Starbucks/OldCountry, etc. etc., etc. Way, way, WAY too much money is being spent here in town that doesn’t stay here, while we are heading into the worse economic times the area has experienced in many, many years. We have so many great places right here! I pray that our community wakes up and supports our own soon! (otherwise, I’m afraid that we will again start seeing the bumperstickers, “will the last one out of Kankakee please turn out the lights”)
Good job, by the way, Denise, in keeping us all informed about “the scene”. I find myself referring to your column/blog and trusting you more and more. Please keep it up!
