Best Bites column (July 23)

Here’s the Best Bites column that appeared in yesterday’s edition of The Daily Journal.

New menu at El Campesino

As a semi-regular visitor to El Campesino in Bradley, I was surprised on my last visit to find that the menu has received a dramatic face-lift and also features 15 new items. The menu is now several pages long and includes pictures of some dishes, along with other cosmetic enhancements. (Does it matter that the menu is pretty? Not really, but it sure doesn’t hurt.) Also, on my way out the door I was given a VIP card, which earns the customer a free lunch after 10 visits. (You get one punch per visit with a minimum purchase of $7.)

If you’ve never had lunch at El Campesino, they have several specials that are a bargain at $4 to $5, and I’ve had great luck getting my order very quickly. El Campesino is at 580 N. Kinzie Ave. in Bradley. Call (815) 934-0151.

I used the To Your Door delivery service for the first time on Friday, and wow, was I impressed. I placed an order at La Siesta (yes, I love Mexican food) at 8 p.m. and To Your Door got it to my house in Bourbonnais in 20 minutes flat. Plus, the delivery fee was only $5. To Your Door says they deliver anything anywhere. Service is available from 10 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. Call them at (815) 614-3456.

If you’ve watched Man v. Food on The Travel Channel and fantasized about trying to devour a nearly impossible amount of food in one sitting, then I’ve got great news for you. Bull’s on Broadway has an “Imposi-bull burger” challenge that will test even the biggest of appetites. The five-pound monster meal is three pounds of burger, a half pound of cheese, a half pound of bacon, a half pound of toppings (pick two: lettuce, onion, tomato or pickle), a half pound of bread and one pound of fries. It costs $25, but if you can eat all of it in one hour, without any help, you get a $25 gift certificate to Bull’s, your picture on the wall and a T-shirt. Bull’s on Broadway is inside The Spot (1010 W. Broadway) in Bradley. They’re open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner.

Dinner by Design (1230 N. Convent St.) in Bourbonnais now sells lunch four days a week. The made-to-order meals are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Options include a Mexicali Burger, California Chicken Wrap and Thai Chicken Pasta Salad, and each costs $5.50. Call (815) 802-2003 to place your order, and allow 30 minutes for preparation. A full menu and order form is available on the Best Bites blog (www.myKankakeeCounty.com/blogs/dining).

Earlier this month I printed some comments from a reader who said that Dos Amigos in Kankakee had the best guacamole in the county. A reader named Jan decided to put the claim to the test, and here’s what she sent me via e-mail: “We have tried guacamole from all over the United States and HE WAS RIGHT! Not only was their guacamole exceptional, but the other dinners we tried were also very good. We had the taco dinner and the carna asada dinner. You get a lot of food for the low prices and the dining room was very clean. The employees were very nice as well.” Dos Amigos is at 522 E. River Street.

Best Bites appears Thursdays in The Daily Journal. If you have food-related news to share, contact Denise at drenckens@daily-journal.com or (815) 937-3374.
