Kankakee Country Club wins Chef's Challenge

Congrats to Tony Morrical from the Kankakee Country Club. Morrical and partner Gretchen Jordan won the annual Pro Chef Challenge, which was held Saturday at the Kankakee Farmers Market.

Also competing were Denny Simpson, who has won the past two years, and a team from the Hilton Garden Inn in Kankakee.

At 8 a.m. on Saturday, the three chefs received $50 to buy ingredients from the farmers market vendors. Each then prepared a three-course meal to serve to a panel of judges at 11 a.m.

I was lucky enough to be one of those judges, and it was a lot of fun. All the competitors made great dishes. The winning meal consisted of perfectly seasoned tomatoes wrapped in a flour tortilla, a fresh pasta dish with chicken sausage, and for dessert, grilled puff pastry with peaches and mascarpone cheese.

Hi there. This is Gretchen. I just wanted to say I had a awesome day coming out to compete for the first time at the farmers market. I’m so glad you enjoyed what me and my chef Tony made. I call the tomato appetizer Fresh Mozzarella Italian Pinwheels. Thank you so much for your time.
