Best Bites column (Nov. 19)

This is the Best Bites column that appears in today’s edition of The Daily Journal.

FroYo Creations will open tomorrow at 509 N. Convent St. in Bourbonnais. Customers will be able to make their own frozen yogurt creations (thus the name), choosing from among six flavors of frozen yogurt and 36 different toppings. The end result is weighed and priced at 36¢ per ounce. Sweet treats with a healthy twist is the overall theme of the store’s offerings, which also will include smoothies, fresh fruit kabobs, granola bars, flavored coffees and hot chocolate, and frozen yogurt pies. The fresh fruit smoothies will be available in nine flavors and can be enhanced with one of eight boosters that add an even bigger good-for-you kick. FroYo will open at 11 a.m. daily and close at 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and at 8 p.m. on Sunday. The phone number is (815) 937-9000. An official grand opening is planned for Dec. 5.

If you don’t have plans for Thanksgiving, or if preparing (and cleaning up after) a big holiday meal isn’t something you’re looking forward to, I’ve got great news: Several area restaurants are willing to do the cooking and cleaning for you. Here’s a list of restaurants that will be open on Thanksgiving Day:

America’s Bistro (110 Meadowview Center) in Kankakee will serve a traditional Thanksgiving dinner from 11 p.m. to 4 p.m. If you pay for five or more at one table, you will be served your own turkey and all the trimmings, and any leftovers will be boxed up for you. The cost is $16.95 per person. Reservations are required. Call (815) 932-6795.

The Bennett-Curtis House (302 W. Taylor St.) in Grant Park will be open from noon to 6 p.m. The meal includes your choice of turkey, ham or prime rib. The cost is $18.95 for adults and $7.95 for kids 10 and under. Reservations are required. Call (815) 465-2288.

Coyote Canyon (1359 Locke Dr.) in Bourbonnais will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Family House Restaurant (312 S. Kennedy Dr.) in Bradley will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Great American Grill, which is inside the Hilton Garden Inn (455 Riverstone Parkway) in Kankakee, will be serving a buffet from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The price is $19.95 for adults, $8.95 for children ages 4 to 12, and free for children under aged 4. Reservations are recommended. Call (815) 932-4444.

The Kankakee Elks Country Club (2283 Bittersweet Dr.) in St. Anne will be serving a buffet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $19.95. Call (815) 937-1228 for reservations.

La Villetta restaurant (801 W. Broadway St.) in Bradley will be offering a buffet from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $13.99, or $6.99 for children 10 and under. Reservations are recommended. Call (815) 939-4960.

La Villetta is also offering Thanksgiving dinner to go. The dinners serve 4 to 6 people or 10 to 12 people, and include roasted turkey, fresh-baked rolls, cranberry relish, four side dishes and a dessert. Orders must be placed by Monday and picked up between 10 a.m. and noon on Thanksgiving Day. To order, call (815) 939-4960 or e-mail them at lavilletta@comcast.net.

Marcotte’s (118 E. River St.) in Momence will serve a free Thanksgiving dinner from noon until 4 p.m. Owner Pat Marcotte wanted to help those in the Momence area who may not have anywhere to go for the holiday meal, or who can’t afford one. GFS donated some of the food. Marcotte’s will close after the dinner to clean up, but will reopen at 6 p.m. and offer the regular menu until 10 p.m. Call (815) 472-3300 to order.

Old Route 66 Family Restaurant (105 S. Old U.S. Route 66) in Dwight will be open from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reservations for large groups would be helpful. Call (815) 584-2920.

There won’t be a newspaper next Thursday because of the holiday, which means there won’t be a Best Bites column. Brendan, Grady and I wish all of you a Happy Turkey Day a little early.

    Denise…here is Bull’s for the Thanksgiving holiday…

It’s not too late to order your Thanksgiving turkey from Bull’s Pit Smoked Barbecue in Kankakee. We’ll start with a juicy 14 pound bird and brine it overnight in a special marinade. Then we’ll season it with our own special seasoning, and smoke it in a blend of hickory and cherry woods for an unforgettable flavor. For larger families, discounts for multiple turkeys are available!

Half pan and full pan side dishes are also available. Not sure? Stop by Bull’s this weekend where he will be offering up samples while supplies last. And next Tuesday and Wednesday, we’ll be adding specials to the menu and offering full smoked turkey lunches and dinners with all the trimmings!

As an added bonus, we’ll also be offering Grandma ‘Rene’s homemade pumpkin bread all next week. You’ve gotta try this to believe it!

Stop by Bull’s in Kankakee to order yours. Bull and Steve will be there on Thanksgiving Day so you can pick up your order, at the time you specify. Pre-payment is requested, so that all we have to think about Thanksgiving Day is making your day special! Thanks for letting Bull’s Pit Smoked Barbecue be a part of your Thanksgiving holiday, and for your loyalty throughout the year!

    Thanks!
