Request for vegetarian restaurants
Recently, several readers have asked me for help finding vegetarian restaurants in the area. I usually recommend Bahay Kubo (263 N. Convent, Suite 10, in Bourbonnais) as being vegetarian friendly, though not strictly vegetarian.
Can any of you suggest other places?

From a reader named Gary: “”The Orthodox Greeks have many, many days of abstinence from meat, so they can do some creative meatless cuisine – if you want some truly wonderful vegetarian goodies beyond boiled rice, steamed broccoli, and a salad bar, try the Goat Cheese veggie sandwich at Brickstone.”

I would highly recommend the falafel at Niro’s on Kennedy Drive. Call before if you want fast-food as they make them FRESH each time. As far as I know, the only real falafel this side of Chicago, and its reeeeeally good. LaViletta has the Capellini and manicotti that are tasty veggetarian (non-vegan) ideas. Most restaurants in the area will prepare the selection w/o meat (i.e. Chicken Alfredo, hold the chicken) but they dissapointingly still charge the full price. Try a Taco Tuesday Taco Bravo, substitute refried for the meat. Inexpensive and yummy, even for you omnivors and meat-atarians.

El Burrito Loco’s refried beans are cooked without lard, and their rice is vegetarian as well. They have a vegetarian section on their menu too.
Otherwise you’re pretty much stuck with chain places, taco johns and taco bell both can substitute beans for meat in most of their dishes, and subway and jimmy johns both have veggie subs. Ruby Tuesday has the salad bar, and mini veggie burgers. Denny’s has a veggie burger. I think Brickstone has a grilled portabella sandwich but I could be wrong.
The nearest pure vegetarian places are either in Chicago, or there’s also a place in Arlington Heights. Naperville has a pizzeria with a vegan pizza.
The south suburbs and exurbs are seriously lacking in vegetarian cuisine.

Carmen’s Bakery & Deli in Herscher does several vegetarian options.
I understand their hummus and eggplant wraps are excellent.

The Allspice Cafe at Riverside Medical Center has a rotation of vegetarian items through their menu, such as a Black Bean Chipotle Burger with Bruschetta, Wild Mushroom Flatbread and Tomato Bread on Fridays.
A number of places have items that can be adjusted to one’s liking as well, such as some of those mentioned above. Even though Brickstone’s menu is 98% meat-based, their veggie sandwich is very good.

The owner of French Toast told me they have vegetarian options. I noticed an organic vegetarian omlette (made with eggs) on the menu. http://www.i57life.com/img/OnsaleMerchant/89/menu.pdf
