MiMi’s Maxwell Street now open
MiMi’s Maxwell Street opened June 4 at 178 E. North St. in Bradley.
It’s a simple menu, with just six items to choose from — a hot dog, Maxwell Street Polish, Maxwell Street Burger, grilled chicken breast, pork chop with bone or MiMi’s rib snack. They bill themselves as “the best in the world”, and based on the Maxwell Street Polish I had, I wouldn’t argue.
I admit that this was my first experience with the Maxwell Street style, which co-owner LaShawn Porter explained meant that it would be served with grilled onions. But consider me a convert. The perfectly caramelized onions that were heaped on top of the beef Polish, along with some mustard and sport peppers, took what could have been ordinary and made it extraordinary.
MiMi’s is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. They’re closed on the weekends. They focus on being “quick, easy and good,” so it’s a good bet if you’re in a hurry. Bring cash, though; they don’t accept anything else.
MiMi’s is located on the south side of North Street, just east of the railroad tracks. To place your order, walk up to the window of the small “shack,” which has been home to a few other restaurants before.
The phone is (815) 293-7871

I stopped by and had a maxwell polish & a burger and I must say, they are the closest to the “real” maxwell as you can get around here. I was surprised because I have visited other places in the area that have them (the polish), but they don’t come close to the taste. The burger was darn good too. I would recommend this place in a heartbeat. The only downside is they don’t have fries, but it is still worth it because you get chips instead. I didn’t even care after I started eating.
