Reader recommendations: Johnny Angels
Two readers have called me recently to recommend Johnny Angel’s (119 W. Washington) in Momence.
“Wow is all I can say,” said a reader named Dick. He tried the 48-oz porterhouse and said, “The filet part was the best steak I’ve ever had in my life, period,” even better than excellent steaks he had had at Mr. Benny’s in Chicago and Ceasar’s Palace in Las Vegas.
If you want to give this monster piece of beef a try, please be prepared to wait. It takes at least 30 minutes to cook.
Dick also has become a regular at the all-you-can-eat frog legs dinners, held on Sundays after 4 p.m. On a recent visit his group included four or five diners who ordered the frog legs and “we never had to ask” for more, he said. Dick said the frog legs were medium to large in size, with a light breading and very tender. “They’re the best I’ve had around here in a while,” he said. “I think everyone will go back.”
Another reader said Johnny Angel’s “was very, very good.” In her voicemail message, the anonymous caller went on to say, “The food was delicious. The Italian beef was really, really good. The chef and everybody was just so nice, it was just a comfortable feeling and it’s a great place to eat.”
Johnny Angel’s is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. The phone is (815) 472-6801.

This was our second experience at Johnny Angel’s. After more than one hour and twenty minutes we walked out!!! We asked if there was a problem. None given. When told we would like to leave we were not offered a discount or even a simple apology. The same thing happened the first time but they had only been open a week so we decided to try again. We were watching other tables and if you ordered a pizza you were OK. I feel bad for the wait staff because they will have to be the ones to hear the complaints. The owners are good about floating around but none were there when we would have liked to talk to them. I hope the restaraunt makes it, Momence needs something like this. But if this continues it will be another empty building the city will have to deal with.

My wife and I ate there about a month ago. We ate late so we tried an appetizer sampler. I usually don’t order Maryland Crab Cakes unless I am near salt water. I’m glad I ordered them even though I was a block from the fresh water Kankakee River! Very good stuff.
We did not have a long wait. There was a decent crowd in the restaurant even at 8:30-9:00 P.M.
The pizza is very good too.
I hope Johnny Angel’s sticks around for a long while.
