THREE NEW RESTAURANTS TO OPEN NEXT MONTH IN KANKAKEE
A shake-up on the Kankakee restaurant scene will result in the loss of one restaurant but the addition of three new ones.
Tim and Karen Schmidt closed the doors at Lydia & Groucho’s Coffee Shop & Deli at the end of February. They have purchased Sully’s Banquets in Kankakee and are working on opening two new restaurants — Kankakee River North and The Freight House Pub — inside the historic building in April.
Kankakee River North will offer elegant dining and also banquet facilities. It will be on the main floor, in space formerly known as Sully’s Lounge, and will be open for lunch and dinner daily. In keeping with the Sully’s heritage, piano music will be a standard feature.
Upstairs will be The Freight House Pub, a more casual, family-friendly restaurant featuring TVs, pool tables and a jukebox. Offerings will likely include burgers, ribs and some items from the Groucho’s menu.
While many details of the menus are still being developed, a few items from the popular Sully’s menu could be resurrected. On the beverage side, microbrews and a wine list are planned for both restaurants.
Banquet reservations are already being taken and reservations made with Sully’s prior to the sale of the business are being honored. Call (815) 939-1210 for more information.

Moving into the former Groucho’s location will be Rondinella’s Italian Imports & Deli.
Currently located at 189 N. Kinzie in Bradley, Rondinella’s will modify their offerings when they reopen next month, adding some items and eliminating others. Hot and cold sandwiches, deli meats and cheeses, pastries, olives and specialty salads will continue to be offered, as will fresh Labriola bread, which is also sold at the summer Kankakee Farmers Market.
