Try the coffee, smoothies at Elijah’s Fountain

Friday, June 10th, 2011

If you’re in downtown Kankakee and need your coffee fix, try Elijah’s Fountain, which is now open inside Love Christian Center at 249 S. Schuyler.

Elijah’s offers all the traditional coffee beverages, including espresso, lattes and cappuccinos. The Mystic Monk Coffee that’s used is roasted by the Carmelite Monks, a Roman Catholic monastery, in the Rocky Mountains of northern Wyoming.

Also available are hot tea, iced tea and fruit smoothies. The smoothies are especially good, particularly in this hot weather. Try a Peach-Pear-Apricot smoothie with vanilla yogurt powder, or the 4 Berry smoothie. All are made with 100% fruit, and a 20-ounce cup contains 4 servings of fruit. I also recommend the Mexican hot chocolate, which can be served hot or frozen. It has a hint of warm spice, and you can also order a latte version that includes coffee.

To sweeten your coffee or tea, ask for Agave Organic Syrup instead of sugar or honey. The natural sweetener is very popular among those wanting to limit their calorie or sugar intake, including diabetics. If you’re not watching your calories or sugar, and you need a little snack to go with your beverage, Elijah’s also carries cookies, muffins and scones from Sakkett’s Home Bakery.

Elijah’s Fountain is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone is 815-401-5454. For more information, you can follow them on Facebook.

Readers recommend Caribbean Delite in Kankakee

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Several readers have contacted me to recommend Caribbean Delite, a new restaurant that opened two weeks ago in Kankakee.

“The Jerk Chicken is amazing!” wrote a reader named Aisha. “I have had my share of Jerk Chicken in my life and I must say, Caribbean Delite has some of the best!”

A reader named Stephen wrote, “Had the pleasure of trying out their cuisine today and two words describe this place: authentic and outstanding! I enjoyed the Oxtail with rice and beans, vegetables, fresh greens and fresh plantain. Cornbread is also included in the meal. My friend, Tom, had the Jerk Chicken and I sampled some and it was outstanding as well.”

A reader named Nick wrote, “Just tried it. I don’t know if you’ve ever been to Jamaica or not, but I have. They nailed it. I haven’t had legit Jerk Chicken or Jerk Pork in a decade. Now I have.”

If you’ve never tried Jerk before, it’s a spice mixture made with allspice and Scotch bonnet peppers, among other ingredients. It’s rubbed on the meat or fish, which is then grilled. Caribbean Delite offers Jerk pork, catfish, shrimp and red snapper, in addition to chicken. Given the peppers, any Jerk is typically quite spicy. If you want to give it a try but are nervous about the heat, try the chicken and eat around the skin.

Other classic Caribbean dishes on the menu include curried goat, brown stew chicken, oxtail, greens, rice and peas, and plantains, which are like bananas but not sweet. As for the goat, I can’t taste the difference between goat and beef, so don’t be afraid to try it. Just be warned that the curry is a little spicy, too. For dessert, try the plantain bread pudding.

Caribbean Delite is at the southwest corner of Station and Wall streets in Kankakee. The address is 1004 W. Station St. Currently customers order from a walk-up window, but a drive-through window is expected to be open within the next two weeks. In the fall, a door will be added to allow customers to order and wait indoors.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 or 9 p.m. daily. The phone is (815) 802-0333. Catering is also available.

Elijah’s Fountain is now open inside Love Christian Center in Kankakee.

The coffee shop offers all the traditional beverages, including espresso, lattes, cappuccinos, and hot and cold tea. They also serve all-natural smoothies. I’m told the Chai and Peach Vanilla smoothies are especially good.

Love is at 249 S. Schuyler. The coffee shop will have its own phone number in the future, but for now you can call (815) 933-2822. For more information, you can follow Love on Facebook.

Lik ‘Yer Chops now open inside The Looney Bin

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Lik ‘Yer Chops is now open for lunch and dinner inside The Looney Bin bar in Bradley.

The menu currently features sandwiches, half-pound burgers, Red Hot Chicago dogs and Maxwell Street Polish. Also available, though not yet on the official menu, are deep-fried hot dogs with grilled sauerkraut and bacon, and a cheeseburger with bacon and egg on a pretzel bun. More menu items will be added in the coming days and weeks, including an Italian breaded steak sandwich, a pepper and egg sandwich, and wings bathed in homemade barbecue or buffalo wing sauce.

I’m looking forward to making my way through the growing menu as my first two meals — the Tom’s Ribeye Sandwich and the Italian Beef — were both excellent. The steak was tender and full of flavor, thanks in part to the special “Tom’s” sauce.

On “Wiener Wednesdays”, get two Red Hot dogs with the toppings of your choice, plus fries, for $4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. In the future, look for all-you-can-eat fried chicken, made with a traditional Southern-style breading and deep fried, every Thursday from 4 p.m. to close.

All sandwiches at Lik ‘Yer Chops come with fries and the portions are huge. Toppings to your sandwich, burger or hot dog are all complimentary, including chili, cheese and grilled onions. Nearly all the ingredients are coming from local sources, including the meat, which is supplied by Cliff’s in Aroma Park. It’s never frozen and cut fresh for every order.

Lik Yer Chops is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., or later if there are customers.

Formerly Doctor Judy’s, The Looney Bin is at 201 S. Schuyler Ave. in Bradley. For more information, follow The Looney Bin on Facebook.
