One Sixty Four North has $4 martinis on Thursdays

Monday, September 21st, 2009

If you’ve never been to One Sixty Four North in Kankakee, here’s a good excuse to check them out: They’re now offering $4 martinis on Thursdays from 4 to 9 p.m.

The martini menu lists more than a dozen options, including the French martini, which is picture below.

The glasses are attractive AND functional, as the ice in the bowl keeps the drink cold. When you take a sip, just pick up the top, leaving the bowl on the bar or table.

One Sixty Four North is at 164 N. Schuyler Ave. in Kankakee.

Reader recommendation: Sling Shots Saloon in Cullom

Friday, September 18th, 2009

From a reader named Mary Ann:

I’ve read the write-up on the Kempton Restaurant (been there) which is good, but if you go 5 miles down the road to Cullom, you will find a great place to eat at Sling Shots Saloon.

Most people say they serve the best pizza around all week long.

They serve a menu of sandwiches, wings, and appitizers all week. Lunch specials Wednesday thru Saturday.  Evening specials are   Wednesday nite Fried Chicken, Thursday nite Tacos, Friday nite Cod or Prime Rib, and Saturday nite Prime Rib or Ribeye Steak.

It’s worth a trip to the country to savor some good food. Their phone is 815-689-2193.”

Sling Shots Saloon is at 119 W. Hack St. in Cullom.

Slim & Chubby's Pour House to open in Kankakee

Monday, August 31st, 2009

A new bar, Slim & Chubby’s Pour House, will be opening soon in Kankakee.

Owner John Hogan (aka “Slim”) and friend Matt Neblock (aka “Chubby”) expect to complete renovations in about three weeks. Much of the interior decor is from an Indiana barn that was torn down. The old lumber, beams and tin roofing are meant to create the look and feel of a “pour house.” The playful name also brings to mind the art of pouring beer, of course.

The building is at 1500 N. Hobbie. Formerly home to Up in Smoke, and a real estate company before that, it sits on the Bradley/Kankakee border, which is also where Hobbie becomes Kinzie Avenue, aka Illinois Route 50.

There won’t be food, but there will be coffee and doughnuts every morning. (Very clever. That way if your boss drives by and sees your car there at 7 a.m., he won’t know whether you’re having coffee or Miller Lite for breakfast.) There will also be basic bar fare, including pizza and beef jerky. Hours will be 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily.

When I hear of a firm opening date I’ll post an update on the blog. If you want to be alerted via email, please contact me to be added to my email list.

The casualties continue to mount. I just heard that Big Randy’s Bar & Grill in Kankakee closed July 3. I’ve left a phone message to see if I can find out anything more.

Spinner’s Tailspin Inn (formerly Heather’s Tap) is open at 1895 S. Schuyler Ave. in Kankakee. The name is a play on aviation terms and is a nod to the profession of the new owner, local pilot Joe Kintz.
