Could you eat a 5-pound burger?

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

If you’ve watched Man v. Food on The Travel Channel and fantasized about trying to devour a nearly impossible amount of food in one sitting, then I’ve got great news for you.

Bull’s on Broadway has an “Imposi-bull burger” challenge that will test even the biggest of appetites.

The five-pound monster meal is three pounds of burger, a half pound of cheese, a half pound of bacon, a half pound of toppings (pick two: lettuce, onion, tomato or pickle), a half pound of bread and one pound of fries.

If you can eat all of it in one hour, without any help, you get a $25 gift certificate to Bull’s, your picture on the wall, a T-shirt, and the burger is free. If you fail, the burger will set you back $25.

There are photos on Facebook of Dennis Downs of Chebanse attempting to eat the entire burger. Click here to see the pictures.

Bull’s on Broadway is inside The Spot (1010 W. Broadway) in Bradley. They’re open Tuesday through Sunday. Lunch hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; dinner service starts at 5 p.m. and stays open depending on how busy the bar is. Their phone number is (815) 935-9971. You can read more about the restaurant in my blog post from March 23, 2009.

Let's Eat Out launched this morning

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

If you’re like me, and saving money and eating out are high on your “like to do as often as possible” list, I’ve got great news: There’s now an easy way to do both at the same time.

Let’s Eat Out is a new online program that features coupons for local eateries. The program, which launched this morning, can be found here. From the Web site, you can search the available coupons by cuisine type, location of the restaurant, atmosphere and more. When you find a
coupon you like, print it out and take it to the restaurant.

If that’s not convenient, use our Mobile Club to get coupons sent to your phone. Text the word EAT to our short code, which is 48534. Every time you send a text message, you’ll receive a coupon from our database.

You can also sign up for the Let’s Eat Out Email Club if you want the coupons to be sent to your email in-box. Click here to get started.

More coupons will be available as more advertisers join the program, and advertisers can change their coupons monthly.

Special thanks to our debut advertisers:

Niro's Gyros offers delivery

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Niro’s Gyros (545 S. Kennedy Dr.) in Bradley now offers delivery to all of Kankakee County for $2.

When I stopped in recently, I resisted the temptation to get a gyro and instead tried the veggie pita, one of several meat-free options on their menu. For meat-lovers, there are numerous sandwiches, wraps, melts, burgers and Philly cheese options to choose from, in addition to the classic gyros, which come in single, double and triple portions.

Niro’s is open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week. To order, call (815) 935-1790

Bull's on Broadway now open in Bradley; Kankakee location to get liqour license

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Bull’s on Broadway is now open inside The Spot (1010 W. Broadway) in Bradley. This is the second restaurant for Ryan (a.k.a. “Bull”) Wilder, who opened Bull’s Pit Smoked Barbecue in Kankakee last year.

The Bull’s on Broadway menu is still heavy on the barbecue, but with new offerings, too. Appetizers include Irish Nachos, an awesome combination of French fries, melted cheese, bacon pieces and a drizzle of Ranch dressing. Sandwiches include an Ultimate Grilled Cheese, made with Parmesan-crusted Texas toast, three kinds of cheese and bacon. Then there are the pub burgers. Choosing from the eight options on the menu (including the BBQ burger, Western Burger, Extreme Cheese Burger and Bull’s Gut Buster) is tough, but I can’t resist the unusual, so I ordered The Hangover Burger. It comes topped with cheese and a fried egg, and it was delicious. See photos below.

Bull’s on Broadway is open Tuesday through Sunday. Lunch hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; dinner service starts at 5 p.m. and stays open depending on how busy the bar is. Their phone number is (815) 935-9971.

As for the Kankakee Bull’s location, Ryan is completing the paperwork for a liquor license, and he expects to add  beer and wine to the menu by early this summer. He also told me their sweet tea is excellent with Malibu Rum, so expect to see that offered, also. Ryan isn’t sure what he’ll call the concoction, though, so if you have any good ideas, you can leave a comment below.

Second "Bull's" location to open today

Friday, March 13th, 2009

I learned last night that the new Bull’s opens today in Bradley.

Bull’s On Broadway is inside The Spot, which is at 1010 W. Broadway. The original restaurant, Bull’s Pit Smoked Barbecue, is on Station Street in Kankakee.

I’m heading there today for lunch and will post more details when I have them.

I finally tried China Chef in Bradley

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

I have finally “discovered” China Chef in Bradley.

If you’re one of the restaurant’s many fans and are wondering what rock I’ve been living under for the last four years, I don’t have a good answer. My only excuse is that when I would drive by, I would see the closed mini-blinds and doubt whether they were even open or not.

Fortunately, many of you know better, as I found a bustling — and unexpectedly large — dining room during my first visit a few months ago.

I stopped in again on Friday night, this time to dine in instead of grabbing take-out, and enjoyed a wonderful meal of egg rolls, Kung Pao shrimp and scallops, and beef lo mein. The feast left plenty of leftovers, which my husband and I enjoyed the next day.

I’m allergic to MSG, so I ordered my meal without the seasoning. You can also request no salt.

China Chef also serves cocktails, including a Mai Tai that is cleverly described on the menu as “a tasty way to start a hangover.”

China Chef is at 331 S. Kennedy Dr. in Bradley. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, except Friday and Saturday when they stay open until 10 p.m.

Call (815) 932-4461 to place an order.

________

Thanks to readers Jerry and Lisa, whose prodding led me to China Chef. Here’s what Lisa sent me via email:

“My favorite place when I want Chinese food is China Chef in Bradley, IL. Their food isn’t “generic” tasting like you find with these “buffet” places. They have been in this are for more than 20 years. They’re priced a little higher, but the portions are huge! Best part is that you can actually split an entree WITHOUT being charged an additional amount of money. They have a banquet room for larger parties.

They may not have a “kid friendly” menu, but there’s always the Sweet and Sour Chicken dish that you can get the sauce on the side and it becomes a lot like Chicken Nuggets. All you need is a side of fries.”

CiCi's Pizza coming to Bradley or Bourbonnais

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

A CiCi’s Pizza will be opening this summer in Bradley or Bourbonnais.

Cindy and John Karasiewicz, who have owned the local Cheezers Pizza restaurant for 20 years, have been accepted as franchisees and are waiting for Cici’s to scout the area and approve a location.

CiCi’s is a pizza, pasta, salad and dessert buffet restaurant with a per-person price of around $5. Seating capacity is between 180 and 200, making it a good choice for large groups. (It also explains why my one experience in a CiCi’s was in Indiana a few months ago when I tagged along with my brother’s college rugby team.)

Sadly, Cheezers Pizza will be closing, but hopefully not until Cici’s opens. Cindy says they will definitely be open this month and next, though after that it depends on how much business they receive.

If you’re a Cheezers fan and want to get your fix before they’re gone, visit them at 161 Bethel Dr. in Bourbonnais. They’re open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.
