Movie reviewer spending more time watching rentals than new releases

By Karyn Bowman

Some of you may have been reading the tag line at the bottom and are wondering why in the world does this chick never write about movies when she was the critic for so long?

A fair question to question to ask.

The sad truth is I have not been in a theater for months. Going into a theater feels painful right now for me. Plus I hate going alone or the time never opens up. Every Friday night our family rents a movie to watch with our pizza so I am keeping up with some of the family movies. My stack of rentals from Blockbuster is pretty big too.

My friend Heather wanted to go a month or so ago to see He Just Not That Into You and I could not get away. This past week I was down with Bronchitis and the husband initially planned to do a drive-in trip to see Monsters and Aliens. Considering all of us had been sick in one capacity or another, I felt sitting in a car while the temperature was in the 30s and the wind whipping was not a good idea.

So the kids and my husband went to Paramount while I stayed home and slept. It was a nap that felt like ambrosia, I was so tired and so worn. I am not sure if the dog even bugged me; that is how good of a nap it was.

I thought, well, maybe they will give me a good report and I can still write something. But the husband stated the movie was good for what it was. And the kids repeated lines I had heard in the commercials. They briefly talked about how cool the 3D effects were but nothing really stood out for these viewers. It was fun and goofy and amusing for a short time.

Watching movies is still fun and joyful. But these days instead of rushing to the theater I find myself rushing to see what is on TV or at the video store. Truthfully, I have not yet watched Mamma Mia!, The Holiday, or Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Knightly enough times.
